EE Colloquia: Overview of Electricity Market Operation

Abstract: Electricity markets are functioning around the world. This talk will cover fundamentals of wholesale electricity market operation, focusing on integrated power system and electricity market operation, using PJM market, the largest wholesale electricity market in the world, as an example. Hot topics, such as uncertainty, gas-electric coordination, renewable, storage, Distributed Energy Resources (DER), demand response, and system operation under extreme weather, will also be discussed.

Bio: Dr. Hong Chen is a visionary leader who has been actively leading IEEE PES technical activities at various capacity for the past three decades: chairing task forces, technical committees, and the Technical Council -- serving as Vice President of Technical Activities at the PES Governing Board.

Dr. Chen is a Principal Engineer at PJM Interconnection. Following her passion for technological innovation, she also serves as an industry advisor for many R&D projects at NSF, DOE, and PSERC. Her research interests include electricity market operation, operation risk mitigation, stability analysis and load forecasting.

Hong obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Southeast University in China in 1992 and 1995, and her Ph.D. from University of Waterloo in Canada in 2002, all in electrical and computer engineering.
